Begin

Gabriella 2I have a very special guest poster sharing here today–my daughter, Gabriella. We have just relaunched her blog, Joyful Homeschool. Gabriella wants to share her personal thoughts of the brand new book, “Begin”, written by Philip and Erin Ulrich. This is the first book in a series called the Growly books

.

.

 Begin

From when I read the first chapter of  Philip and Erin’s book, I knew that it was the start of a great adventure.  It is about an adventurous bear named Growly.  He is about to become a young bear and is going on a trip to find his grandfathers long lost friend, C.J.  I  don’t normally read these sort of books, but from the start, I absolutely enjoyed the whole thing; the story line, the detail, the illustrations– everything.

If someone were to ask me “What book does this story remind you of?”, I would say “King Solomon’s Mines”, a story about an adventurer who searches for gold.  I never thought that I’d read an adventure story about a bear! It also taught me how to write a new kind of story, because I am a fiction writer. One thing that touched me was Growly’s grandfather, and when they visited him before he left.  It’s because my grandpa went to heaven last April. While I read that part of the story, my heart ached, in a good, yet sad feeling, of how I miss his stories, and I miss his voice.

I think that this is a book that every kid (and adult) would enjoy, especially if you like adventures, and you like bears!  One of the other things that I liked, was that it left me in a cliffhanger. I am now very hungry, waiting for the next book in the series to be put out. Meanwhile, I will get lost in another book, still eagerly waiting for the second adventure of Growly to come.

Erin and Philip: I want to personally thank and congratulate you on your story.  I think that it was a BIG success and can’t wait for the next book, and to hear what happens to Growly, Chippy, Tully and C.J. Thank you so much!

Sparkly Green Earrings {a memoir for mothers everywhere}

This post contains affiliate links and I appreciate your support! {You can read my full disclosure here}. But this review is not sponsored nor was I given the book in exchange for it.

Sparkly Green Earrings

Sparkly Green Earrings isn’t a book I would have normally picked up. However, all my blogging mama peeps kept tweeting and writing Facebook statuses stating how fabulous (and funny) it was. I added it to my Amazon wish list. Next thing I know, it’s free for Kindle. Holla!

I’m not against memoirs. I’ve read a few. Actually, I’m starting to like them more and more. They are way more personal and offer reality mixed with truth. Whereas your straight up non-fiction books on parenting and motherhood can just leave you feeling like a failure based on all the things you aren’t doing “right.” So this was definitely a breath of fresh air. Not because Melanie airs out her dirty laundry in it. But because she’s simply authentic about her struggles and offers nuggets of wisdom here and there. Things she’s learned. Not things she’s pointing at other people to learn.

She talks about her life before having her daughter, her expectations and dreams and how they were shattered by reality. But then? Her life was remade into something more beautiful then she could have imagined. Even with each step of releasing her daughter in new ways: preschool, kindergarten, first grade.

She talks about her potty training adventure and it’s collide with the preschool her daughter attended. Seriously, I don’t want to give it all away. It’s really good and it’s one of the few books that I just couldn’t put down.

It was something I needed in this particular season of motherhood because it helped me learn to lighten up and laugh with my children.

So, thank you Melanie, for writing this beautiful memoir to share with us. It is a gift for my mama heart.

I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of Sparkly Green Earrings and reading it at your earliest convenience.

A Gentle Answer eBook

I set out to write a series last October to accompany the popular 31 Days series that Nester hosts each year. But with the Allume conference coming up at the end of the month, I was kept pretty busy, so I wasn’t able to finish the series.

I started the series for myself, because I got tired of always snapping at my children. I thought it might be good to learn a thing or two from Scripture. Then, I thought an eBook of collective thoughts an ideas would make a nice devotional to offer my faithful readers.

So here it is! If you are reading this through your email or in a Reader, you’ll find the download link at the bottom of this post. It will NOT be hyperlinked. So look for a URL, copy it and paste it into your browser. Then save it to your computer.

This file is a PDF file, so you will need to have the free Adobe reader, at the very least, to read it.

PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THIS LINK WITH ANYONE.

But for those of you who are Kindle users or use Kindle apps, this eBook is made to be Kindle friendly! Did you know there is a way to send it to your Kindle or Kindle reader? Did you know you don’t need a Kindle to use the Kindle reader app? I have one on my iPhone that I utilize quite frequently.

A Gentle Answer iPhone

If you have an Android, you can still download the app. And if you don’t have a smartphone, no problem! You can download the Kindle app for your PC or your Mac. It’s a really nifty application to have.

So, how do you get the PDF to your Kindle/Kindle reader?

Follow the directions found for the Send to Kindle app. Super easy to use!

A Gentle Answer on Kindle

This eBook is a gift for mother’s who need help keeping a gentle tone in the midst of frustrations. It offers insights that we often don’t think about on the fly. I hope that it will help us all learn to pause and take a step back before we choose to respond to a child who’s having a difficult day (or many days)!

If you have not yet subscribed and would like to, all you need to do is enter your email address into the box at the bottom of this post or if you prefer to reader via RSS Reader (such as Feedly, which is my reader of choice), you can subscribe here instead.

Tomorrow, when a new post goes live and is delivered to your reader or inbox, you’ll find the link to the eBook at the bottom of the post. It will NOT be hyperlinked. So look for a URL at the very bottom, copy it and paste it into your browser. Then save it to your computer.

If you still have trouble locating the link or getting it to work, please email me at christin at joyfulmothering dot net.

I hope you’ll stick around and allow me to visit your reader or inbox. My goal is to encourage, inspire, and at times challenge you as a mother, as a follower of Christ, as wife, as a woman. You’re something special and you need to know it. This eBook addresses a time when I challenge you as a mother.

Embrace your babes today–they are a great gift.

All About Reading {for your preschooler}

All About Reading for Your Preschooler

My 4-year old daughter loves to do things with me, especially while I’m trying to work on lessons with her older siblings. So, I thought it would be a great idea to get her a curriculum of her own.

Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links. Please know I fully support and endorse this company and it’s products. You can read more about my full disclosure policy here.

All About Learning Press delighted me by agreeing to send me their entire preschool pre-reading package to try out. We both LOVE it and I am super excited to be able to share this with you.

This curriculum helps me to be intentional to sit down with my preschooler and learn with her. If you have older children at home whom you homeschool, you know that the little ones don’t always get the focused attention in this area, and I’m learning, they need it just as much, if not more, than their older siblings.

Yes, there are a lot of freebies out there, but it costs a lot of time to go through and find everything you need. Some moms have that time and some don’t. This is something worth investing in, one way or another.

Lizzie 1 Craft

Imagine my daughter’s delight when I told her she could color on her finger with marker! She made cute fingerprint “peanuts” for her elephant. I love that it’s hands-on, but not overwhelmingly so.

My two year old also loves doing this alongside his sister. It helps him learn to recognize each letter of the alphabet by name. It also helps him hone his crafting skills. Cutting, coloring, and painting are important for developing fine motor skills. These work and strengthen the muscles in their fingers so they can properly hold a pencil and write well in the future.

All of my children got a kick out of me doing rhyming games with Ziggy the Zebra puppet (not pictured here *wink*).

This is a hands on curriculum–something I think is important to help with retention in young children.

The All About Reading Pre-Reading Deluxe Kit comes with a teacher’s manual, a student book containing the letters/craft pages, flashcards with box, 2 readers, Ziggy the Zebra puppet, two posters, a progress chart with stickers, a CD-R for letter sounds, and a handy tote bag to carry it all in!

This kit is well worth every penny and I love the time it helps me set aside to spend with my two youngest. They learn {with little preparation} and get valuable time spent with mommy!

If you have older children, All About Learning Press has higher levels of teaching reading. You can check them out here. I plan to get the next level up (Level 1) once my daughter completes this program. I find it’s quite affordable comparably and just enough work to keep her attention.

All About Learning Press graciously sent me the deluxe package to review. All opinions are my own and I endorse their company. This post contains affiliate links. You can read more by checking my disclosure here.

What I’m Reading This Month (April)

These are the books I’m working through this month…

Heartfelt Discipline: Following God’s Path of Life to the Heart of Your Child

This has been an excellent read. Breaking down the walls of specific types of parenting and teaching parents how to be lead by the Spirit to train, correct, and discipline their children. I’m absolutely loving it.

“True biblical discipline is about much more than simply controlling a child’s behavior. It’s about shaping the heart, which is why sympathy is such an integral part of heartfelt discipline.” -Clay Clarkson, Heartfelt Discipline

Beyond Survival: A Guide to Abundant-Life Homeschooling

This book lays out a solid foundation for homeschooling. Practical ways to help you build a firm homeschooling structure.

“It’s essential to begin the building of our children’s educational ‘house’ with a blueprint, a specific plan, an educational philosophy. The blueprint is the educational approach you use in teaching your children. It is the format you use to present information.” -Diana Waring, Beyond Survival

Beyond Survival

Beautiful Battle: A Woman’s Guide to Spiritual Warfare

There’s no doubt there is a battle raging over here as we wrap up the end of our adoption process. I have grazed some of this book in the past, but I think there is no better time to pull it out then now.

“Spiritual warfare has more to do with the state of your heart before a holy God than a list of things to do or avoid. It involves interaction, sometimes confusion, falling down, getting back up. It involves your willingness to look foolish, to take crazy steps, to trust God’s voice. While there are principles to know and practice, it’s your ability to trust in God’s power and authority that will bring about the victorious life.” -Mary DeMuth, Beautiful Battle

On Becoming a Writer: What Every Blogger Needs to Know

BecomingWriter-3D-5002

My goals might be a bit high, but we’ll see. I’m not doing virtual assistant work anymore, so I do have a bit more time on my hands…and having a quite time with my children in the afternoon while we all read quietly is time well spent, I’d say! Thirty minutes of reading, for me, is quite a few pages of a book.

What are you reading this month? I’m always looking for new titles to dive into!

What I’m Reading This Month {March}

These are the books I’ve been digging into this month:

More-or-Less-Cover-Small

More or Less

This book makes you rethink how much is enough. What could we do with the access that we have when there are people around us in need? There is no formula for this as each person needs to be lead by God and decide within their own lifestyle. No judgement. Just a challenge for those with more to consider living with less by being in tune with the needs of those around us. I know I am one who has more.

To Walk or Stay

To Walk or Stay

My sweet friend Lara Williams opens her heart with the world and shares about the struggles her marriage faced and how God redeemed what the world, even the Christian world, would have deemed as hopeless or “not worth it”. She shares the raw, the honest, the ugly. Whether you struggle in your marriage or not, this testimony is a beautiful working of God’s grace among ashes. He is the God of restoration and He uses Lara’s story to speak into my own life and marriage. I couldn’t recommend this book enough. In an age and society when divorce is at an all time high, we need to take a deeper look and fight for our marriages.

Abundant Simplicity

Abundant Simplicity

This is a powerful book about taking a serious look into our lives and being honest about our own self-indulgence. We all have it and always will, to some degree, on this earth. But what can we do today to say “No” to something we want for something greater? Over time we can form habits of denying ourselves something we want. For what? What’s the point? We begin to see a bigger picture when we’re not drowning in selfish desires which can often play into our self-worth.

The What and How of Helping Your Kids Fall in Love With the Bible

Today’s guest post is from author and speaker, Keith Ferrin.

When I was a kid, I didn’t like reading the Bible very much.  I didn’t dislike it. I believed it was true, and I thought that was enough. Thankfully, that all changed in my 20’s. How that happened is a long story, but the bottom line is I love the Bible now.

My wife and I have three young children. We want them to start loving it now…not fifteen years from now. We know that if they believe it’s true – and enjoy it – they will be much more likely to read it, internalize it, and be shaped by it.

In my book – Like Ice Cream: The Scoop On Helping the Next Generation Fall in Love With God’s Word – I boil down a year of conversations with parents, children’s pastors, and youth pastors into nine principles for helping kids love the Bible. Let’s look at one of them.

First, the What: Read It Together.

Sounds simple, right? Except that kids don’t always sit still and listen. (Or is that just my kids?) That said, something that Emilie Buchwald wrote still rings in my ears:

“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”

I hear countless grownups tell me about the books that their parents read to them. Little House on the Prairie. Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. The Chronicles of Narnia was the series in my house. I loved them then. I love them now. I want my kids to feel about the Bible the way I feel about the Chronicles of Narnia.

But how? Here are three suggestions.

One: Expect it to be good.

This is huge. Our expectations typically coincide with our experiences. If we expect the Bible to be fun, we are way more likely to enjoy it than if we expect it to be dry. Sadly, most of us expect the Bible to be true, but we don’t expect it to be engaging and fun. If our own expectations are low, our kids will sense it as we read to them.

Two: Learn from Curious George.

When was the last time you read Curious George to a little kid? Did you give the different characters voices? Did you read differently when George was joyful, scared, or getting into big trouble? Of course you did!

Do the same thing next time you read the Bible to your child. Pretend that you are reading Curious George to a five-year-old. Give the characters voices. Read with passion. Change your tone. Pause. Get louder or quieter. Your kids will have heaps more fun (and so will you).

Three: Change it up.

Once I started looking more intentionally, I found that there are an unbelievable number of wonderful children’s Bibles and storybooks out there. We read different ones all the time. Here are a few of our favorites from the last few years:

  • The Toddler’s Bible and The Preschooler’s Bible by V. Gilbert Beers – These have really colorful, engaging artwork, as well as discussion questions woven conversationally into the text. (My reviews are here and here.)
  • The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones – This Bible shows how Jesus is connected to the stories in the Old Testament as well as the New. Make sure you get one of the versions with the audio CDs included (Deluxe or Collector’s). The narration is as good as I’ve heard.
  • The Action Bible by David C. Cook – Hands down, the best Bible for 7-12 year olds. Written in comic book style, my kids always want me to “read another story.” (Here’s my review.)

There are many, many more. Feel free to email me (keith-at-keithferrin.com) for recommendations – or with some I should add to my resource list!

Read expectantly. Read with passion. And read a wide variety. Then let me know how it goes. (I truly want to know.)

The Reading Lesson {Giveaway}

Last week I was working with my 4-year old daughter, teaching phonics, and she was so adorable going through the sounds with me.

Then we came to the part when I asked her to tell me the sounds, to see if she remembered what we went over.

It went like this:

I was teaching her the sound of “c” as in “cat”.

Then I ask her what sound “c” makes–

–and she says, “meeooow”.

Face-palm.

I have to admit, though, she had me laughing for a good 10 minutes–and then any time I spoke about it with someone after that! Smart little cookie, I’d say!

The beauty of teaching phonics–teaching reading really, is that when it seems like you’re getting nowhere, all of a sudden, one day, it clicks. They learn that the letters make sounds, and several sounds together make words. It just clicks. She is my fourth child who I have taught to read and each time is such a rewarding experience.

I think it really helps to have a good program, such as The Reading Lesson, to help guide you in a bit of a systematic and consistent way.  They offer several tools to teach in a variety of ways. The DVD and the CD-rom helps to re-iterate what you teach from the book and it’s fun to watch in action.

Giveaway

I am giving away an entire package of “Reading Lesson” goodies to one reader!

How to enter:

Simply leave a comment and tell me how you might benefit from this awesome package.

Be sure to check out their website!!

Giveaway ends Friday night at 11:59pm EST.

U.S. residents only please.

Winner will be selected and contacted Saturday morning!
