The Reading Lesson {Giveaway}

Last week I was working with my 4-year old daughter, teaching phonics, and she was so adorable going through the sounds with me.

Then we came to the part when I asked her to tell me the sounds, to see if she remembered what we went over.

It went like this:

I was teaching her the sound of “c” as in “cat”.

Then I ask her what sound “c” makes–

–and she says, “meeooow”.

Face-palm.

I have to admit, though, she had me laughing for a good 10 minutes–and then any time I spoke about it with someone after that! Smart little cookie, I’d say!

The beauty of teaching phonics–teaching reading really, is that when it seems like you’re getting nowhere, all of a sudden, one day, it clicks. They learn that the letters make sounds, and several sounds together make words. It just clicks. She is my fourth child who I have taught to read and each time is such a rewarding experience.

I think it really helps to have a good program, such as The Reading Lesson, to help guide you in a bit of a systematic and consistent way.  They offer several tools to teach in a variety of ways. The DVD and the CD-rom helps to re-iterate what you teach from the book and it’s fun to watch in action.

    My 3.5 year old son has been crying after I leave his room at night when he looks at books on his own because he cant “read” them by himself. 42. I’m a homeschooling mom of three, my oldest two started in public school and one of them really, really struggles with reading because she was never taught phonics.. they learn sight words. She can read but she has big trouble and we have realized she has no concept of what I mean when I tell her to “sound” a word out. Our son is three and already doing some preschool work. I would love to have something like this to do with him. He already knows some sounds but isn’t consistant – I know, he’s young – but I have purposed to make sure he gets a good phonics foundation so he does not have to be a weak reader.

  43. I am a homeschool mommy of 5 beautiful blessings – Cheyenne 16, Michael 9, Molly 7, Aly 4 and Lily 2. They keep me so busy in such a wonderful way. They are also all so unique in their learning methods. I continue to try find balance while I homeschool the older children and do preschool with both of the younger children. 76. I teach second grade in a low income school. Two other teachers on my grade level and I have decided to do a block of leveled group reading. I will be teaching the lowest readers of our 3 classes. There are such different levels of readers just within this one group! Some can read the words but not fluently and some are still learning their letter sounds! This program would give me a starting point in which to better reach every student’s needs!
